Stone houses, flower-lined alleyways, mountains in the background: the setting is almost too beautiful to be true. In high season, you\u2019ll be sharing it with lots of other people. Chopin worked on several of his Preludes whilst there, and George Sand drew on her experience to write her story <em>*A Winter in Majorca*<\/em>. The cells they occupied can be visited today, as can the monastery\u2019s former pharmacy and its cloisters.  <\/p><p>Visiting at the same time of year as they do gives the visit a special significance. Just remember to check the opening hours, which are reduced in winter. <\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1bd4273 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1bd4273\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<blockquote><p><strong>Did you know? George Sand wasn\u2019t exactly kind to Majorca. <\/strong><\/p><p>In *A Winter in Majorca*, the writer recounts a stay that was a far cry from the picture-postcard image: the rain, the damp of the Chartreuse, Chopin\u2019s illness and difficult relations with the villagers, which she describes without leniency. The book is now sold in every shop in the village, proof that Valldemossa has forgiven her. On many of the fa\u00e7ades, small ceramic tiles pay tribute to Catalina Thom\u00e0s, the Mallorcan saint who was born in the village. Her birthplace is in the centre. The winter air offers clearer views of the dry-stone terraces, olive groves and mountain peaks, which are sometimes blanketed in snow during the coldest winters. Dei\u00e0 is remembered for the poet Robert Graves, and S\u00f3ller for its tram to the harbour.
