Perched on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, in the north-east of Mallorca, the Artà Caves are among the island’s best-preserved natural wonders. Although less well-known than the Drach Caves, they offer a more immersive, peaceful and authentic underground experience. If you’re looking to discover Mallorca in a different way, away from the crowds and the standardised tourist routes, this article is for you.
The Artà Caves: an introduction and history
The Artà Caves in Mallorca are situated a few kilometres from the village of Artà, in the municipality of Capdepera, in the Llevant region. They open out on the cliff face some fifty metres above sea level, offering a spectacular entrance with views over Canyamel Bay and the rugged north-eastern coastline.
Known since ancient times – the Romans are said to have ventured there, and human bones provide evidence of prehistoric occupation – they were first explored scientifically in the 19th century. Jules Verne is said to have drawn inspiration from them for his novel Journey to the Centre of the Earth, captivated by their immense scale and the surreal atmosphere they exude.
Now designated a protected natural site, the Artà Caves welcome visitors in a way that respects the site, with limited group sizes and a pace of visit designed to encourage contemplation.

What you can see inside the Artà Caves
The interior of the caves reveals a world shaped over millions of years. As soon as you enter, the height of the ceiling is striking; some chambers are several tens of metres high, creating the impression of a natural cathedral.
The Queen’s Hall
It is one of the most impressive chambers on the tour. The stalactites and stalagmites merge here to form monumental columns, illuminated in such a way as to reveal their textures and colours without detracting from the natural atmosphere of the place. The lighting is understated, designed to complement the site, without any over-the-top spectacle.
The Hall of Columns
More broadly speaking, this chamber takes its name from the limestone formations that dot the space like the pillars of an ancient temple. The silence here is absolute. Here, one becomes aware of the slowness of geological time: every centimetre of stalactite represents centuries of patient formation.
The sensory atmosphere
What is striking about the Artà Caves, beyond the visual spectacle, is the overall sensory experience: the constant coolness (around 18°C all year round), the mineral scent of damp rock, the muffled sound of trickling water, and a darkness that exists only in its natural state. You step into something alive.
Artà Caves vs Drach Caves: what’s the difference?
This is a question that often comes up amongst travellers planning a trip to Mallorca. Both places are remarkable, but they offer completely different experiences.
The Drach Caves, in Porto Cristo, are the most famous on the island. They are home to Lake Martel, one of the largest underground lakes in the world, and offer a mini classical concert on small boats. The experience is spectacular, but it is shared by several hundred people at a time, at fixed times, with little freedom of movement.
The Artà Caves are a different experience: small-group tours, a leisurely pace, no organised shows – just the natural formations, the light and the silence. And unlike the Drach Caves, they open out to the outside world with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean, which makes the experience even more unique.

Avoid visiting at midday during the high season; although visitor numbers remain moderate compared to the Drach, the first visits of the morning offer particularly beautiful natural light at the entrance. Wear closed, comfortable shoes: the ground is sometimes damp. And let your eyes adjust to the darkness before trying to photograph everything; some details only become apparent with time.
