A bit of history: Cala d'Or, from fishing port to coastal gem

Before becoming one of the most desirable spots on Majorca’s southeast coast, Cala d’Or was just a small fishing hamlet, formerly known as Cala de ses Dones (“the women’s cove”). Access was difficult, there was no infrastructure, and only a few boats anchored in its turquoise waters.

In the 1930s, artist and urban planner Josep Costa Ferrer, originally from Ibiza, discovered this secluded place and fell in love with its scenery. He decided to create a village in his image, inspired by Ibicenco architecture: whitewashed cubic houses, flat roofs, wooden shutters, and shaded alleyways. He was the one to officially name it Cala d’Or, the “Golden Cove.”

Tourism only began to take off in the 1970s, but the original spirit has been preserved. Unlike other overbuilt areas on the island, Cala d’Or has retained a human scale, avoiding tall buildings and massive infrastructure in favor of aesthetic harmony, greenery, and tranquility.

Today, this chic seaside town attracts European visitors looking for a natural setting, an elegant atmosphere, and wild coves just a short walk away.
